Damp Proofing
There are two types of "damp". Either "Rising Damp" or "Penetrative Damp". Rising damp is where moisture rises through masonry from the ground and penetrative damp is when moisture ingresses laterally through the masonry. We have treatments for all types of damp problems and generally, these come with the assurance of a thirty year guarantee.
Damp can cause serious deterioration of brickwork, and masonry, and rising damp is often the principal cause of fungal decay in ground floor timbers.
In addition to the obvious damage to the internal decoration and wall plastering, the structural fabric of the building can be seriously affected.
A chemical damp proof course in conjunction with replastering offers a speedy cure for most rising damp problems. This entails drilling the affected walls at intervals and pressure injecting the chemical into the masonry.
As far as penetrative damp goes - we still drill the holes and inject a damp proof course but prior to replastering we add a waterproof slurry to the walls, ensuring no moisture can penetrate the masonry. In some cases, it may be worthwhile using membrane to combat the problem. There is more information on our membrane work on our "Basement Waterproofing" page.
In certain circumstances it is necessary to treat the walls from both sides; and in advanced cases auxiliary work may have to be carried out to complete the treatment.
Please read our "Damp FAQ" page for specific answers to questions we regularly come across.
If you think you may have a damp problem call us today so we can arrange an honest, experienced surveyor to complete an inspection and provide a report detailing the problem.
